Blue Ridge Community College Scholarship

The Blue Ridge CTC Foundation represents an ongoing partnership between the College and the community. Every dollar raised will help students attend Blue Ridge Community and Technical College, provide funds to improve existing facilities, enhance and expand the curriculum. A variety of scholarships are available to Blue Ridge students through the College and the local community, based on need and academic achievement.

Students must complete a FAFSA and the Blue Ridge CTC Foundation Online Scholarship Application for all scholarships.

Paper applications may be submitted in person or mailed to BRCTC Foundation at 13650 Apple Harvest Drive, Martinsburg, WV 25403.

High School Scholarships

Blue Ridge CTC Foundation High School Excellence Scholarship

Application Deadline: March 2

The Foundation will provide one $750 Scholarship to one graduate from each of the schools below. This award is available only to high school seniors planning to enroll in at least 6 credit hours at Blue Ridge Community & Technical College. The award must be used in the fall semester following graduation from high school. Application requirements are as listed below.

Applicant must be a West Virginia resident currently enrolled as a senior in one of the above listed high schools. Must have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA. Students interested in applying must complete the Blue Ridge CTC Foundation Scholarship Application, submit a copy of their current high school transcript, a list of extracurricular activities, and a typed personal statement discussing college/career goals.

Blue Ridge CTC Foundation High School Presidential Scholarship

Application Deadline: March 2

Blue Ridge CTC Foundation is providing a unique opportunity for one Tri-County high school student who has demonstrated an outstanding level of scholastic excellence to receive the Blue Ridge CTC Foundation Presidential Scholarship. The Presidential Scholarship is an award of $1500 and selected from the recipients of the Blue Ridge CTC Foundation High School Excellence Scholarship.

The recipient of this award must meet the application requirements for the Blue Ridge CTC Foundation High School Excellence Scholarship AND must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 to be eligible. Applicant must be a West Virginia resident currently enrolled as a senior in one of the above listed high schools. Students interested in applying must complete the Blue Ridge CTC Foundation Scholarship Application, submit a copy of their current high school transcript, a list of extracurricular activities, and a typed personal statement discussing college/career goals.


Agribusiness

Berkeley-Jefferson Extension Master Gardener Association Agribusiness Scholarship

Application Deadline: October 28

The Berkeley Jefferson Extension Master Gardener program is an educational program designed to meet the horticultural needs of the citizens of West Virginia. Extension Master Gardeners are volunteers who represent the West Virginia University Extension service. BJEMGA offers a $500 scholarship to a student in the two-year AgriBusiness program. Scholarship Award is to be equally divided between the fall and spring semesters

Criteria:

  • Applicant must have completed one year of the two-year program
  • Applicant must maintain a minimum 2.5 grade point average
  • Applicant must show financial need
  • Applicant must reside in Berkeley or Jefferson County.

Application Process:

  • Applicant must complete Blue Ridge CTC Foundation Scholarship application
  • Applicant must submit a brief (200-word maximum) statement about his/her interest in horticulture
  • Applicant must agree to attend the BJEMGA fall luncheon to be introduced to the membership

Scholarship Award is to be equally divided between the fall and spring semesters

Farm Credit Foundation Agribusiness Scholarship

Application Deadline: April 28 and October 28

Purpose:

The Farm Credit Foundation for Agricultural Advancement was founded in 2015 as part of Farm Credit’s 2016 centennial celebration. This Agribusiness Scholarship award for the academic year totals $10,000 to be equally divided between five students for the fall and spring semesters.

Criteria:

  • Applicant must have at least a 2.5 grade point average.
  • Applicant must demonstrate financial need.
  • Applicant must reside in the Horizon Farm Credit’s territory made up of the following states/counties:
    • Delaware:  all counties
    • Pennsylvania:  all counties
    • Maryland:  Baltimore, Carroll, Caroline, Cecil, Dorchester, Frederick, Harford, Howard, Kent, Montgomery, Queen Anne’s, Somerset, Talbot, Washington, Wicomico, Worcester
    • West Virginia:  Berkeley, Brooke, Hancock, Jefferson, Morgan, Marshall, Ohio
    • Virginia:  Accomack, Clarke, Frederick, Northampton, Page, Shenandoah, Warren

Business

Dr. Trudie Holder Scholarship

Application Deadline: April 28

The Dr. Trudie Holder Scholarship was established by Blue Ridge faculty and staff from Blue Ridge CTC in honor of her retirement and her 27 years of dedicated service to the College and students. The total award is up to $1,000 per year for a full-time non-traditional student in a business-related field of study who has: completed one year of college study; has a G.P.A. between 2.80 and 3.20. The applicant must complete a FAFSA form, and preference is given to students not eligible for PELL Grants

 

Shumaker Family Scholarship

Purpose:

The Shumaker Family Scholarship was established in November 2023 to serve Veterans and Active Duty Military Personnel enrolled in a Business or IT degree. The total scholarship award is up to $4,000.00 per academic year. The award is disbursed equally in the Fall and Spring semesters.

Criteria for Selection:

  • Applicant must have at least a 3.0 grade point average
  • Applicant must demonstrate financial need
  • Applicant must submit a personal statement about how the scholarship will help them achieve their college and career goals.

Criminal Justice

Berkeley County Crime Solvers Scholarship

Application Deadline: October 28

The recipient is chosen by the Criminal Justice Department.


Culinary

The Hollywood Culinary Casino Scholarship

Application Deadline: April 28

The Hollywood Casino Culinary Scholarship was established in 2012 by Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races. The total award for each student is $1000 per year. Applicants must have a 3.0 grade point average or better, be in need of financial assistance, and be enrolled in a culinary related program. Students must complete the FAFSA.

Steve Weiss Culinary Arts Scholarship

Application Deadline: April 28

Purpose:

The Steve Weiss Culinary Arts Scholarship was established in January 2016. One student will be awarded a $500.00 scholarship for the fall semester.

Criteria for Selection:

  • Applicant must have completed two semesters in the Culinary Arts program.
  • Applicant must have a 3.0, or better, grade point average.
  • Applicant must submit a typed personal statement about financial need and culinary career goals.

Scholarship Award:

Submissions will be evaluated by, and the recipient determined by, Chef Steve Weiss and a committee of his choosing. Award will be given for the fall semester in the amount of $500.00.


Developmental Education

Ida Elizabeth Hendricks Scholarship

Application Deadline: October 28

Mrs. Ida Elizabeth Hendricks served her students and the community as the Coordinator of Developmental Mathematics Education at both Shepherd University and Blue Ridge CTC. In honor of her long service and commitment, Mr. William Hendricks created a scholarship for developmental mathematics education during the spring semester of their application. Application requirements include grade selectivity, a letter of recommendation, and a personal essay.


Early Childhood Education Major

Guttmann Family Scholarship

Application Deadline: April 28 and October 28

Purpose:

The Guttmann Family Scholarship was established in August of 2017 by Elaine and Paul Guttmann. The total scholarship award is $3,000.00 per academic year. The award will be made in the form of two $750 awards in the fall semester and two $750 awards in the spring semester. A student may receive up to two awards from this scholarship.

Criteria for Selection:

  • Applicant must have at least a 2.0 grade point average
  • Applicant must have completed at least 2 semesters of study at Blue Ridge CTC in the Early Childhood Education Development Program
  • Applicant must demonstrate financial need
  • Applicant must submit a typed personal statement about how the scholarship will help them achieve their college and career goal

Scholarship Award:

Two awards will be given for the fall semester in the amount of $750.00 and given in the spring semester in the amount of $750.00.


English

The Professor Todd Young Scholarship

Application Deadline: April 28

The Professor Todd Young Scholarship was established on January 9, 2013 by faculty, staff and students from Blue Ridge Community and Technical College in memory and honor of Todd’s dedicated years of inspiring teaching, acting, and directing services to the Division of Arts. The total award is up to $500.00 per year.

Criteria for Selection:

  • Applicant must be a degree-seeking Associate of Arts student
  • Applicant must have a grade point average between 2.50 and 4.0
  • Applicant must have completed or be enrolled in ACFN 010, ENGL 101, ENGL 102, ENGL 204, or ENGL 208
  • Applicant must write a short essay about the value of literacy in one’s life
  • Applicant must complete the FAFSA and Blue Ridge CTC Scholarship Application

General Scholarship

Blue Ridge CTC Equality Scholarship

Application Deadline: April 28 and October 28

Purpose:

Preference to students who identify as LGBTQ or a child of LGBTQ parent(s) or guardian(s). Additional preference will be given to a student who is (or has been) any one or more of the following: first-generation, homeless, in the foster care system, undocumented, or successfully passed the GED or TASC exam.

Criteria for Selection:

  • Applicant must have at least a 2.5 grade point average
  • Applicant must be a Blue Ridge CTC degree seeking student
  • Applicant must demonstrate financial need
  • Applicant must submit a minimum 500 word essay on the student’s reason they should receive the scholarship. Address either being LGBTQ or growing up in an LGBTQ household (child of LGBTQ parents or guardians). Include any challenges you overcame, leadership lessons learned, any community service you have completed, and participation in clubs/organizations.

Encova Scholars Scholarship

Application Deadline: April 28 and October 28

Purpose:

This annually funded scholarship was established in January 2016 by the Encova Foundation. The Encova scholarship will be awarded to students enrolled at Blue Ridge CTC, meeting the following criteria.

Scholarships shall be awarded to students who meet one of the following criteria:

  • Applicants whose parents reside in the State of West Virginia, and whose parents have either permanent total disability or have passed away from a work related injury.
  • Applicants whose parents or grandparents are employees of Encova Mutual Insurance Company, a West Virginia insurance corporation.
  • Applicants who demonstrate financial need.
  • Applicants must maintain a minimum of 2.5 grade point average.
  • Applicants may be pursuing any major; however, preference shall be given for applicants majoring in math, nursing or education.
  • Applicants must be enrolled as a fulltime student.
  • Applicants must demonstrate financial need.

Application Process:

  • Applicants must complete an Encova Scholars Application.
  • Applicants must complete a FAFSA application.

Scholarship Award:

Scholarship Awards will be distributed for the fall and spring semesters.

Leatherman Trades and Industry Scholarship

Application Deadline: February 28, August 5

Purpose:

The Leatherman Family scholarship was established in September 2019 by Lynn Leatherman and Lyndsey Matschat to serve students pursuing a Career Advancement Certificate. The total scholarship award is $1,000.00 per academic year. The award will be made in the form of one $500 award in the fall semester and one $500 award in the spring semester. A student may receive up to two awards from this scholarship.

Criteria for Selection:

  • Applicants who demonstrate financial need
  • Applicants pursuing a Career Advancement Certificate
  • A typed personal statement explaining how the scholarship will help them achieve their career goals.

Application Process:

  • Applicant must complete a Blue Ridge CTC Foundation Scholarship application
  • Applicant must complete a FAFSA application
  • Applicant must submit a typed personal statement explaining how the scholarship will help them achieve their career goals/li>

Scholarship Award:

Scholarships awards will be distributed for the fall and spring semesters
All requirements must be met, and the completed application package is due on or before the required dates.

M. Douglass Harlan Memorial Scholarship

Application Deadline: October 28

This scholarship is awarded by Blue Ridge CTC and is open to female two-year degree-seeking students who have at least a 2.0 G.P.A. and are enrolled full-time. It is based on financial need and is renewable. It is not awarded for summer sessions. A female Head of Household who exhibits financial need per FAFSA may receive up to $1000 per year.

This scholarship is also available to full-time staff for half the cost of books, or a maximum of $100 per year if the employee is not eligible for other funds, such as Staff Development.

Raymond B. & Susan M. Benzinger Scholarship

Application Deadline: April 28 and October 28

Purpose:

The Raymond B. & Susan M. Benzinger Scholarship was established in January 2016 by Raymond B. and Susan M. Benzinger. The total scholarship award is $2,000.00 per academic year. The award will be made in the form of one $1,000 award in the fall semester and one $1,000 award in the spring semester. A student may receive up to two awards from this scholarship.

Criteria for Selection:

  • Applicant must have at least a 2.0 grade point average
  • Applicant must be a degree-seeking Associate of Arts student
  • Applicant can be in any degree program
  • Applicant must have completed at least 2 semesters of study at Blue Ridge CTC
  • Applicant must demonstrate financial need
  • Applicant must submit a typed personal statement about how the scholarship will help them achieve their college and career goals.

Awards will be given for the fall semester in the amount of $1000.00 and given in the spring semester in the amount of $1000.00.

West Virginia Employees Scholarship (WVES) – Out-Of-State-Resident

Are you currently employed at a company located in West Virginia, but a resident of another state? If so, then you may qualify for IN STATE tuition. Dr. Peter G. Checkovich created a special tuition program for students living out of state, but working for a West Virginia business. His new program, “West Virginia Employees Scholarship” will waive the out of state cost for those eligible students.

To become a West Virginia Employee Scholar, you must meet the following conditions:

1.Be a graduate of an accredited High School, or GED/TASC program.

2.Be actively employed by a business operating in West Virginia.

3.Have active employment verified from a qualified business for a period of at least 1 year.

4.Complete admissions application and submit transcripts, as requested.

5.Complete scholarship application and submit all relevant employment documents.

Health Sciences

C. Vincent Townsend EMS Scholarship

Application Deadline: October 28

Dr. Townsend was the regional Medical Director of North Eastern Regional Emergency Medical Services for more than 20 years. Upon his retirement, members of the EMS community established this scholarship in his honor.

Jefferson County CEOS Foundation Scholarship

Application Deadline: April 28 and October 28

This scholarship is being established through Blue Ridge Community and Technical College and funded by the Jefferson County Community Educational Outreach Service Special Funds in an effort to give a US citizen of Jefferson County, West Virginia, financial help. The person’s desire must be to better their abilities by increasing their education, working skills and employability within the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. Through this effort on their part, they will be able to have a better chance to have a better life for themselves and/or their family. No discrimination as to age or gender will be made. This scholarship is open to United States citizens of Jefferson County, West Virginia who need financial help. This scholarship will be for first Health Related Courses and second Culinary Arts. The recipient will have a grade average of a B (3.0) but no lower than a 2.00 G.P.A. in the first semester. A completed application, transcript, and request letter will be required of each person selected. The application will be available through Blue Ridge CTC. The possibility of including other fields may be considered at a later date by the Jefferson County Community Educational Outreach Service Council.

The JCCEOS Information Sheet must be signed and submitted with a complete Foundation Application.

Sheila Spangler Memorial Medical Assisting Student Scholarship

Application Deadline: April 28

Purpose:

The Sheila Spangler Medical Assisting Student Scholarship was established in January 2017 in memory of Sheila Spangler. Sheila was the Medical Assisting Program, Lecturer and Externship Clinical Coordinator at Blue Ridge Community and Technical College. Although diagnosed with cancer, Sheila always assisted her students and paved the way for their success. She was a wonderful educator and inspired many students to complete their training as Medical Assistants. One student will be awarded up to a $500.00 scholarship for the fall semester.

Criteria for Selection:

  • Applicant must have completed one semester in the Medical Assisting Program.
  • Applicant must have a 3.0, or better, grade point average
  • Applicant must submit a typed essay on “Why do you want to pursue a career in Medical Assisting?” The essay should include thoughts on what it means to be a professional, a leader, and meeting patients’ needs

Scholarship Award:

A selection committee composed of various members associated with the Medical Assisting Program and the BRCTC Foundation will evaluate submissions. Award will be given for the fall semester up to $500.00


Information Technology

Shumaker Family Scholarship

Purpose:

Nursing

Betty Pugh Memorial Scholarship

Application Deadline: October 28

The Betty Pugh Memorial Scholarship is designated for students at Blue Ridge Community and Technical College studying science or medicine. This annually funded award was established in 2005 by the Martinsburg branch of the AAUW in memory of Betty Pugh, former president of the AAUW and director of the Berkeley County United Way for several years.

District VI Nurses Scholarship

Application Deadline: October 28

This scholarship was established to provide support for nursing students. The scholarship is designated for high school graduates of District VI of the West Virginia Nurses Association with a 3.0 G.P.A. and displaying financial need.

Ernest Houser, Jr. And Gladys V. Houser

Application Deadline: October 28

Gladys Houser was a registered nurse employed by Charles Town General Hospital for 45 years. She helped to establish the first intensive care unit at Jefferson Memorial Hospital. This scholarship is designated for nursing majors with preference to West Virginia residents.

Leonard J. McCormack Endowment For Nursing

Application Deadline: October 28

Established in 1999 by L. J. McCormack of Clearbrook, VA, this scholarship is for the support of nursing awards and programming. This scholarship honors Mr. McCormack’s wife. The McCormack endowment will fund several substantial scholarships annually and recipients are selected by the Nursing Department. Financial need as determined by the FAFSA.

Parsons Scholarship

Application Deadline: October 28

Established in memory of Jean Parsons to honor her career in nursing. Designated for nursing majors with financial need.

S. Dallas Cooley Scholarship

Application Deadline: October 28

Mr. Cooley established this scholarship to fund awards for nursing students from the South Branch area. South Branch nursing students must be in their second year of studies and must have completed their first year with above-average grades.

Virginia Lowe Ramsburg Memorial Scholarship

Application Deadline: October 28

In honor of her sister, Betty Lowe endowed the scholarship. Virginia was a nurse and longtime Shepherdstown resident. This scholarship is available to residents of West Virginia admitted into the nursing program and are chosen by the Nursing Department’s Scholarship Committee.


Stem

Thomas, Bennett & Hunter, Inc. Scholarship

Application Deadline: April 28

The Thomas, Bennett & Hunter, Inc. Scholarship was established in 2021 and will be awarded to a full-time student pursuing a degree in a STEM-based program at Blue Ridge CTC. The total annual scholarship award is $1,000 to be equally divided between the fall and spring semesters.

Criteria for Selection:

  • Degree-seeking student in STEM program
  • Berkeley or Jefferson County Resident
  • Enrolled full-time (registered for 12 or more credits)
  • Demonstrates financial need
  • Preference is given to applicants whose parents or grandparents are employed by or retired from Thomas, Bennett & Hunter, Inc.

TSPI Information Technology Scholarship

Applications Due by April 28th

The TSPi Information Technology Scholarship will be awarded to a student pursuing a degree in an Information Technology-based program. The total annual scholarship award is $2,000 to be divided between the fall and spring semesters. The student will reside in the state of West Virginia and maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.5.

Criteria:
• Degree-seeking student in Information Technology program
• West Virginia Resident
• GPA 2.5 or higher & maintained
• Enrolled full-time (registered for 12 or more credits)
• Demonstrates financial need

Opportunity Scholarship

Application Deadline: April 28 and October 28

The Opportunity Scholarship was established in 2018 to have a significant impact on students in the STEM programming majors of: Mechatronics, Engineering Technology, Plastics Engineering Technology, Cyber Security and Applied Laboratory Technician. The award will pay for all tuition/fees not covered by existing grants and will include a $500 textbook voucher.

Criteria for Selection:

  • Degree-seeking student in one of the following STEM programs: Mechatronics, Engineering Technology, Plastics Engineering Technology, Cyber Security and Applied Laboratory Technician
  • Applicant must have a 2.5 GPA
  • Applicant must demonstrate financial need
  • Applicant must complete a FAFSA application
  • Applicant must have completed at least two semesters of study in the qualifying majors, at Blue Ridge CTC
  • Applicant must submit a typed personal statement about how the scholarship will help them achieve their college and career goals.
  • Applicant must be a resident of West Virginia
  • The scholarship will be awarded to individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to succeed.

Scholarship Award:

The award will pay for all tuition/fees not covered by existing grants and will include a $500 textbook voucher. This scholarship will be awarded in the fall and spring semesters for each qualifying student.


Textbook Scholarships

Sister ACTS Textbook Scholarship

Application Deadline: October 28, April 28

Purpose:

The Sister ACTS scholarship was established in November 2023. The total textbook voucher scholarship award is $1,000.00 per academic year. The award will be disbursed in two textbook vouchers up to $500 for the Fall and Spring semesters.

Applicant must demonstrate financial need
Applicant must submit a typed personal statement about how the scholarship will help them achieve their college and career goals.

Guttmann Family Textbook Scholarship

Application Deadline: April 28 and October 28

Purpose:

The Guttmann Family Scholarship was established in August of 2017 by Elaine and Paul Guttmann. The total textbook voucher scholarship award is $1,000.00 per academic year. The award will be disbursed in the form of five $100 textbook vouchers in the fall semester and five $100 textbook vouchers in the spring semester.

First Energy Foundation Stem Textbook Scholarship

Application deadline: April 28 and October 28

Purpose:

The FirstEnergy Foundation STEM textbook voucher scholarship award is $2,000 per academic year. The award will be disbursed in the form of five, $200 textbook vouchers in the fall semester and five, $200 textbook vouchers in the spring semester. This award will focus on students enrolled in STEM based programs in the Workforce, Engineering, and Technology department.

Criteria for Selection:

  • Applicant must have at least a 2.5 grade point average.
  • Applicant must demonstrate financial need
  • Applicant must submit a typed personal statement about how the scholarship will help them achieve their college and career goals.

Ring Container Technologies Stem Textbook Scholarship

Application deadline: April 28 and October 28

Purpose:

Ring Container Technologies STEM textbook voucher scholarship award is $500 per academic year. The award will be disbursed in the form of five, $100 textbook vouchers in the fall semester and five, $100 textbook vouchers in the spring semester. This award will focus on students enrolled in STEM based programs in the Workforce, Engineering, and Technology department.

Criteria for Selection:

  • Applicant must have at least a 2.5 grade point average.
  • Applicant must submit a typed personal statement about how the scholarship will help them achieve their college and career goals.

Child Development Scholarship

This program awards scholarships to child care workers in West Virginia. Eligible applicants must have successfully completed the U. S. Department of Labor’s Apprenticeship for Child Development Specialist (ACDS) program or are in the fourth semester of the program, and must be enrolled, or accepted for enrollment, in an undergraduate degree program in early childhood education or specialization, in West Virginia. Information on the programs, course requirements, and costs is available from the Child Development Coordinator at Blue Ridge or you may contact the WV Higher Education Policy Commission for more information. GED/EDP Scholarship Program

Scholarships available for the State of West Virginia High School Equivalency Diploma Recipients
A scholarship program administered by the West Virginia Department of Education and sponsored by various schools and institutions is offered annually to the State of WV High School Equivalency recipients. You may qualify for a scholarship if:
1. You are a successful GED® only completer with a score of at least 250 prior to January 1, 2002 or 2500 after January 1, 2002; TASC® only completer with 550 minimum-average of all 5 parts; OR GED and TASC combined – GED 500 minimum average of those tests and TASC 550 minimum average of those.
2. You are a resident of West Virginia and show financial need based upon FAFSA application
3.You have been accepted or are enrolled full-time (12 or more hours) in school

Completion Of An Application Does Not Guarantee Applicant Wil be selected for a scholarship

THIS IS THE FIRST STEP TO THE SELECTION PROCESS. If selected, the $1,000 scholarship or tuition waiver is credited to the student’s account by the sponsoring school or institution ($500 per semester or the amount determined by the school) for educational expenses upon verification of enrollment at the institution. Application deadline is April 30th .

Martha Maxwell Developmental Education Scholarship

The purpose of this award is to support students who are enrolled in Developmental Education programs or classes. This scholarship is for students who complete at least two courses or participate in certain Developmental Program activities. Students are also asked to complete certain criteria. Students are required to type a 500 word, double spaced essay. They are also required to provide a copy of their most recent college transcript, as well as letters of recommendation from the sponsoring NADE Chapter and from their school official, instructor or counselor. Students are also required to give a copy of their resume (1-3 pages) that will include specific information.

Nade Award To Outstanding Alumnus of A Developmental Education Program

This award recognizes an alumnus of a Developmental Education Program who has distinguished himself/herself in an educational career and other areas of life. Students must complete two Developmental courses or participate in particular Developmental Programs. Developmental programs include: TRIO Upward Bound, TRIO Student Support Service, and High School-to-College BRIDGE Program. The student must also be a part of a Special Admission Program, show outstanding accomplishments outside the classroom in an educational or career setting, and enroll in Developmental classes (examples: math, reading, study skills, writing)
