Scholarships

General criteria for most of these scholarships are as follows:

• Full-time enrollment for Fall and Spring semesters (12 hours for undergraduate and 9 hours for graduate)
• Some Scholarships require a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA; however, these scholarships are competitive.

Students will be matched to scholarships based on their application answers. Please note that actual offerings for the upcoming academic year may change as funding is determined on a yearly basis. The scholarship application is typically available late Fall Semester for the upcoming academic year with most deadlines being in mid-February. The Financial Aid Office notifies all students by Bobcat e-mail when the application is available and when the final deadline will be each year.

Most scholarships available to entering freshmen are offered to students who are selected to participate in the annual President's Scholarship Competition. The competition for freshmen is held each year on a Friday in late November or early December.

PRESIDENT'S SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION

New Freshmen and new transfer students who are admitted to GCSU and are from out of state will be considered for the Distinguished Scholar Award.  This award covers the out-of-state portion of tuition for out of state students who are offered this award.  Students must meet the annually determined high school GPA requirements and SAT or ACT test scores (Freshman only) to be considered for this award. Students must enroll each semester in 12 or more credit hours and maintain a 2.5 cumulative gpa to continue receiving the award for a maximum of 4 years. Georgia College students who have applied for a study abroad program may also apply for the Georgia College Study Abroad scholarship fund. Undergraduate students interested in pursuing research while studying abroad may apply for the GC Global Citizen Award, which is a much larger award, but also much more competitive. Students who apply for, but are not accepted to the Global Citizen Award will automatically be considered for the GC Study Abroad Scholarship; only one application necessary. Applications are completed online through the study abroad application website. Be sure to submit applications by the posted deadlines.

STUDY ABROAD

About this scholarship:

• Seven 4-year renewable scholarships awarded each year
• Beginning freshmen enrolled in Chemistry Freshmen Seminar course
• Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0
• Demonstrate the necessary determination to complete a B.S. degree in Chemistry at Georgia College
• Applicants reviewed for recommendation by Chemistry Department Chair
• Applications will be available at approximately mid-term of each Fall semester by Chemistry Freshmen Seminar instructor with a deadline to be communicated at that time

About this scholarship:

• Scholarship aims to increase the STEM workforce by recruiting and supporting academically-talented, low-income students majoring in chemistry or physics in the Department of Chemistry, Physics and Astronomy.
• Students who have a demonstrated financial need can receive financial support of up to $8,000 annually for 4 years ($32,000 total) for first-time freshmen.
• Students will have the opportunity to be involved in undergraduate research, faculty mentoring, academic and career counseling, internship placement and participation in other program activities designed to facilitate timely graduation and entry into the job market.
• Student must be Accepted to Georgia College as a full-time freshman majoring in chemistry or physics in the Department of Chemistry, Physics and Astronomy (federal funding guidelines require that we exclude pre-health concentrations such as pre-medical, pre-pharmacy, pre-dental and other clinical/medical majors)
• Student must demonstrate financial need and also be eligible for the Federal Pell Grant through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid(FAFSA)
• Student must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. National, Permanent Resident, or an Alien admitted as a refugee
• Student must have a minimum 3.5 high school GPA

The Children of Fallen Heroes Scholarship allows the Financial Aid office to offer a maximum Pell Grant award to qualifying undergraduate students. This award is offered to students whose parent or guardian died in the line of duty while performing as a public safety officer while the student was less than 24 years of age or enrolled in an institution of higher education. To be eligible, students must complete a FAFSA and be eligible for a partial award of the Pell Grant. Students must submit a request to be considered for this award along with supporting documentation of their parent or guardian’s death in the line of duty.

HOPE Scholarship provides students with state funds for tuition. The tuition award amount is determined annually by the Georgia Student Finance Commission as a "per credit hour rate" which is published on their website.

HOPE SCHOLARSHIP DETAILS

Zell Miller Scholarship pays full standard tuition for students who earned a 3.7 GPA (un-weighted) for all academic high school classes and earned at least a 1200 in one sitting on the Math and Verbal section of the SAT or at least a 26 on the ACT. Students who are Valedictorian or Salutatorian of their class are automatically eligible for Zell Miller Scholarship.

Dual Enrollment is a program funded by the State of Georgia to assist high school students in paying for college-credit coursework.  Funding for Dual Enrollment covers only courses listed in the approved Dual Enrollment Course Directory which the student will receive dual credit for high school and college degree-level.

Georgia HERO Scholarship program provides educational scholarship assistance to members of the Georgia National Guard and U.S. Military Reservists who served in combat zones, and the children and the spouses of such members of the Georgia National Guard and U.S. Military Reserves.

The Georgia Public Safety Memorial (GPSM) Grant provides grant funds to the dependent children of Georgia Public Safety Officers who were permanently disabled or killed in the line of duty. Funds may be used towards the eligible student’s cost of attendance.

REACH Georgia is a needs-based mentoring and scholarship program providing eligible students the support to graduate from high school and achieve a college education.  Qualifying REACH Scholars will be awarded a financial scholarship upon graduating from high school.

The Hispanic Scholarship Fund offers information on several scholarship opportunities for students with Hispanic heritage. The deadlines for each scholarship vary. For more information on each scholarship, visit the Hispanic Scholarship Fund website.

The Peyton Anderson Scholarship is available to Bibb County students who are pursuing an undergraduate degree and are enrolled full-time. It is available for students matriculating at one of ten schools including Georgia College. There is an application deadline which varies each year. The Ty Cobb Educational Foundation offers scholarships to undergraduate students who are residents of Georgia, U.S. citizens, have demonstrated financial need, and have completed at least 30 semester hours of academic credits with an average of “B” or higher in an accredited college or university are eligible to apply for Ty Cobb scholarships (must be a high school graduate).  Additional information can be found on the Ty Cobb website and all forms and information must be submitted annually by March 1.

UNCF is the nation’s largest private scholarship provider to minority group members.  They also manage a variety of scholarship programs, such as the Gates Millennium Scholars Program, the Walton-UNCF K-12 Education Fellowship and the UNCF/Koch Scholars Program.  Each of these programs—as well as dozens of other internships, fellowships and faculty development opportunities—comes with its own eligibility criteria, application requirements and deadlines.  For more information and the application, visit the UNCF website.

The Watson-Brown Foundation is a non-profit, charitable organization that provides college scholarships for students based on merit and need. The application deadline is February 15th, and applications may be obtained by visiting the Foundation's website.

Many web-based search engines are available that enable students to search for personalized scholarship matches.  Additionally, GAfutures offers a search engine for finding scholarships.  As with any web-based product, students are encouraged to protect themselves from potential scams by spending some time reviewing expert advice that can be found at FinAid.org.
